Culinary or Survival Plants

For good measure think about using plants that can add back to your life

Rosemary

Rosemary has multiple uses in the culinary world.

1. Focaccia Bread - Fresh Rosemary, Olive Oil, and Flaky Salt

2. You can use Rosemary as a garnish in Salads, Soups, and breads

3. You can use Rosemary on all meats and potatoes

Medicinal Reasons:

1. Headaches just rub the twigs against the temples

2. Drink the Herbal tea for indigestion 


Prickly Pear Cactus

 

  • As a food source. The fruit and stems of prickly pear cactus are edible and can be eaten raw or cooked.
  • The fruit has a sweet and juicy flavor  that are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and carotenoids. The can be used in juices, jams, salads, soups, tacos, and other southwest dishes.
  • The pads can be boiled to remove the slimy protection of the cactus only to reveal a very sought after taste you will find in many mexican restaurants called Nopales. 

Hibiscus


 Hibiscus tea. This is a herbal tea made by steeping parts of the hibiscus plant in boiling water.  


Saguaro

  • Add a descripti Saguaro fruit. This is a ruby-colored edible fruit that grows on the top of the cactus arms and stem. It has a sweet and tangy pulp and seeds that can be eaten raw or cooked. Saguaro fruit can be made into jams, desert, syrups, and flour. Plus it is a great against

    Saguaro seeds. These are the small black seeds inside the saguaro fruit. They have a nutty taste and can be made into flour.

  •  Saguaro flesh. This is the green fleshy part of the cactus stem. 

Agave var.

 - Agave nectar. This is a sweet liquid extracted from the roots of the plant. Can use as a sugar alternative

- Agave Sap can be used as an agent to heal wounds, burns, and skin irritations.

- Agave Leaves can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable. Also can be used for rope, basket, clothing, and mats. 

- Agave leaves can be fermented and distilled to make tequila. 

Plant can also be toxic if consumed in large quantities. 

Be sure to check the variety of Agave you have before making anything. 

Jojoba

Jojoba has seeds that produce an oil-like wax that is often called jojoba oil. 

  • Hair conditioner and restorer. Jojoba oil can moisturize and nourish the hair, prevent dandruff and hair loss, and improve hair growth and texture.
  • Skin care. Jojoba oil can hydrate and protect the skin, reduce acne, wrinkles, scars, eczema, psoriasis, and inflammation, and promote wound healing and skin elasticity

Natal Plum


  Culinary uses. The fruits can be eaten fresh or made into pies, jams, jellies, and sauces. They have a sweet and sour taste that resembles cranberries or cherries. They can be used in deserts, ice cream and yogurts.

 Medicinal uses. The fruits are rich in vitamin C, which can boost the immune system and prevent scurvy. They also contain iron and copper, which can prevent anemia and build hemoglobin. 

Do not consume the leaves and stems which can be toxic


Mesquite Tree

  • Harvest the pods and place them in an oven, dehydrator, or in the sun until they are tan in color. 
  • Break the pods into small pieces and place them in a grinder. Grind these pods until they form a coarse flour. 
  • Sift through a mesh or sifter
  • Store mesquite flour in an airtight glass jar in a cool and dry place.
  • You can make breads, pancakes, muffins, cookies, and baked goods.

Carob Tree

 -  The carob tree is a flowering evergreen tree that produces edible pods that have a sweet and chocolate-like flavor. The carob tree has many uses, such as: 

 As a source of food. Carob pods can be eaten fresh or dried, or ground into carob powder, which can be used as a substitute for cocoa powder in baking and beverages. 

Carob can also be used in animal feed
